Did Windows Install an App When You Plugged In a Monitor?
It was recently discovered that certain computer monitors are installing software without asking, or alerting users first.
LG monitor owners reported that Windows installed LG software after the monitor was connected. The important part for everyday users is this:
Windows can sometimes download more than a basic driver when new hardware is detected. Drivers are the software that allows your computer to “talk to” hardware, such a monitor, or a printer.
Normally this isn’t an issue. That is how modern computers work to make life easier for the people who use them
The issue occurs when software is downloaded that unwanted things, such as including extra software that might cause popups, trial offers, or promotional apps you did not knowingly choose.
Why this happens
Windows has a setting that allows it to automatically download manufacturer apps and custom device icons. This can be useful when you plug in a printer, mouse, keyboard, monitor, or other hardware that needs special controls.
But convenience can turn annoying when a manufacturer uses that path to install extra software you did not ask for.
The simple setting to check
If you want to reduce this behavior, check this Windows setting:
1. Open **Settings**
2. Go to **System**
3. Choose **About**
4. Open **Advanced system settings**
5. Click the **Hardware** tab
6. Click **Device Installation Settings**
7. Set this option to **No**:
> Do you want to automatically download manufacturers’ apps and custom icons available for your devices?
This does not remove existing software. It only helps reduce future automatic manufacturer app downloads.
Do Not Remove Drivers
If you do not know what you’re doing, we do not recommend that you try to remove drivers on your own. This can cause your computer to stop working.
The safer places to check for unwanted apps are:
– **Settings → Apps → Installed apps**
– Browser extensions
– Security software trials
– Manufacturer utility programs you do not use
If you are unsure what something is, ask before removing it.
